City Spending is Up, but Is Quality of Life Better?

|

America's largest cities are spending at levels not seen since the New Deal and Great Society eras, yet many residents aren't seeing meaningful improvements in their daily lives. A new RealClearInvestigations analysis by Jeremy Portnoy finds that cities with populations over 500,000 increased inflation-adjusted spending per resident by 18% over the past decade, while quality-of-life challenges like homelessness, crime, poverty, and housing affordability continue to persist.

On this episode of The Miller Report: Real Clear Journalism, Maggie Miller and Jeremy Portnoy examine why higher spending isn't translating into better outcomes across the board. We discuss the growing gap between city revenues and expenditures, examples of cities spending effectively and poorly, and whether cities will be able to balance their budgets without increasing taxes
