Congressmen Take Loans From Supporters

At least 19 members of the current Senate and House -- including Robert Pittenger, Republican of North Carolina, above -- have accepted loans from organizations or moneyed individuals instead of a bank or traditional financial institution, disclosure forms show. Often the lending organizations and individuals rank among the lawmakers' key political supporters. The practice is bipartisan and the loans amount to millions.
