Oregon: State Takes Kids From Low-I.Q. Parents

Forced sterilizations are no longer common for people with low I.Q.'s, but states can still interfere in their lives. Case in point: Oregon has taken a couple's kids away not because they're abusing or neglecting them but because it doesn't think they're smart enough to raise them properly. Eric Ziegler and his partner, Amy Fabbrini, both have below-average IQs—72 and 66, respectively—according to documents provided to The Oregonian. Yet the story describes Ziegler and Fabbrini's hard work in improving their parenting skills.


From the Oregonian:

Rather than build a network of support around them, the state child welfare agency has moved to terminate the couple's parental rights and make the boys available for adoption. … Across the country, a national study estimates that somewhere between 40 percent and 80 percent of parents with intellectual disabilities lose their parental rights.
